Tradition: holiday hike

Yesterday once I hit "publish" I realized that I didn't write about a holiday tradition that is very near and dear to me- the holiday hike. On most holidays after celebrating, or early in the morning (as on New Years Day), my family gets together for a hike in the nearby woods. When we were younger we just walked through the campground down the street, but now we hit more serious woods. It really is a nice way to be together, enjoy the outdoors, and celebrate a holiday. I always love to take hikes, in fact this weekend I took two in the woods, but hikes on holidays with family just seem different--like a perfect tradition.
This weekend I noticed increasing amounts of green. Not a lot yet of green, though, and the woods still looked rather brown. However, the moss was a vibrant green and growing. There were thousands of buds that are just going to pop open with this more seasonable weather. The birds were chirping and singing away.
I think I walked a bit slower this weekend. Noticing how the woods were changing from dormant winter to the more lively state of spring. These next few weeks every time I go for a hike the woods looks completely different, it is evolving into a summer woods day by day. It was chilly and I wore my scarf, but the sun was shining, we were together, and it just looked like the seasons were changing.
It's these little things...family hikes on holidays...yellow berries in the field...mud...green moss that just make life a little sweeter.

Here's to finding a little sweetness in your day!
Have a great Tuesday!!

We used to do holiday hikes when I was a kid. I think I should reinstate them.

Jessica: you take such amazing photos, from such interesting perspectives. I LOVE the image of the green growing up in the woods and your new header looks excellent.

PS i love the idea of a family holiday hike. Now that I live just a few minutes from a environmental reservation I could start up a similar tradition :)

when the weather is warmer we are weekend hikers and I love it so much....my favorite is finding all the places where the deer have made their beds in our prairie...now if only we could ever catch them there, now that would be amazing !!!

I also love to take long, meandering walks. We call them hikes, but they are pretty low stress. I wonder why I let such lovely things get away from me i the hustle and bustle of daily life?
