Local Eating: Freezing Time

My eyes were a bit bigger than my pie recipe and my stomach when I bought strawberries the other day. I had originally put strawberry-jam-making on hold this year since it fell right at the end of a busier than normal school year and the beginning of a hectic summer semester at grad school. I was ok with it for the most part, but a big part of me felt sad that on a cool day I wouldn't have a jar of fresh strawberry jam to open and remember blissful and slow summer days.Since I ended with extra berries after making the pie, I whipped up some freezer jam effectively freezing time in a bottle.
Along with fresh summer strawberries still warm from the field, I froze morning doves coo-ing me awake at dawn. I froze the smell of fresh cut grass. I froze trips to the farmer's market for produce. I froze the scent of roses and lavender from the garden. In that jam I put glasses of wine as the sun is setting and the sound of fireworks late at night. I froze summer in a bottle. This is good.

I'm still getting over the fact that you can ride your bike to the farmers market.

Don't you just love jam? I love all the things that found their way into your jam this year. Beautiful.

Just reading your words made me feel delighted. Just looking at your images made me taste strawberry jam. Today you are a poet magician.

That's just why I love eating home made jam....the memories it brings back. The problem for me though, is that it's so good that it's usually already gone long before winter. ;) Even when I think I have more than enough, it's never enough!

must come back here when the winter doldrums hit!

I've never made freezer jam - how do you do it?

Your jam looks yummy!!! I made some and I hope it will last until the winter months when we do crave summer again.

Hey, you could do this with all of your rhubarb, too! I have a jar of rhubarb jam that my great-aunt made, and it's wonderful.

I made freezer jam this weekend too--so good. And last night my family happily ate it on homemade bread. Such good times.
