My Drafty Life

Those windows that I fell in love with in the schoolhouse- the ones at least 6-7 feet high that let in all the sunlight are causing problems. They are drafty. Really, they are not all that bad unless it gets bitter and then just being near a window is chilly. Having such a large amount of my space covered in these large windows (there is more wall filled with window than actual wall), I decided that instead of working against the windows I would work with them.

Enter a cheery woven cotton, some rice, and my sewing machine. I used this tutorial and just didn't add the patchwork. A quick little project and I ended up with a bunch of draft dodgers to lay in my windowsills and doorway. What a difference there was such a draft coming in from the hallway as well! Sitting on the couch next to the windows is so much more comfortable without the draft. A simple solution to a drafty problem here in the schoolhouse. Now I must get more rice, I have a window next to my studio that needs one!

Have a great day!

Very cheery indeed. My sister-in-law made everyone a draft dodger and I use it on a drafty door in our house. It makes such a difference. I think I need to make some more for all our windows now :)

I agree with everyone that the fabric you chose is so cheerful... I think you might want to consider buying rice in bulk... those windows look huge!

Very cheery! We've stuffed these in the past with dried beans (small ones) - in case you're running out of rice!

I'm sorry about the drafts....I'm sure the view is worth it though. And your draft dodgers look pretty and are useful.

that is the cheeriest draft dodger that I've seen...I love it. the colors speak of spring...it'll come eventually! Until then, you've got a bright spot on your windowsill.

It's so pretty it looks more like a decorative statement than something you had to have out of necessity. your beautiful photos make me wish we had white painted window sills - all the wood is making our house look dreary.
