there's a new knitter in town

knitting on the plane
Ten years ago on a trip to Florida I learned to knit.  Each time I go there I get the knitting bug so this year I came prepared with a sweater plus a couple of skeins of malabrigo for fingerless mitts if I felt so inclined.  Right now I am feeling very knitty so a week with wool was just up my alley (though I can't get through a sweater in two weeks like ms friend to knit with ).
knitting in the kitchen
I did have a grandmaster plan which was to sneakily get my sister knitting.  She has always lovingly accepted my hand knits and worn them with great pride.  She loves knitting when it is a hat or scarf or mitts for her but never felt the slightest desire to learn until one day when she mentioned it- wanting to learn.  I figured a couple of hours on a plane right would be just right so I waited until we were preparing for takeoff and handed a ball of malabrigo and some bamboo needles to her.  Who wouldn't want to learn to knit with some of that buttery malabrigo in their hands?
knitting all day long
I do love sharing in the craft and I have taught many people how to knit.  There is something special about sharing the knitting secret with others.  It is just like magic how a ball of yarn turns into a warm, woolly scarf through a series of loops.  My sister got that magic and quickly was knitting away.  We had to hit the yarn shop for some yarn and needles of her own on day two of her knitting adventure.  She was able to get a knitting lesson from Grammie as well as I sat to the side snapping a few photos.  For a while I thought she might just be humoring me and learning to knit just to appease my knitty soul but then late at night she would ask me how to purl and increase and decrease.  It was real.
knitting lesson
I think we've got a new knitter in town, friends.  A warm welcome to the world of wool and the quiet tapping of needles.  She'll be on sweaters before I know it.  Project number two has been decided-socks.  I'm thinking a basic sock pattern is a good place to start.
clapotis
For me, nothing was better and I started a new project to celebrate.  A clapotis out of a light linen-y yarn for summer.  Just the right project for beach sitting and knit teaching.

It's good to hear that the world has another knitter :)
Love the yarn.

I tried to teach my sister, she obliged me, but didn't like it too much.

Now she is a mega crocheter and I am the one who is struggling.

I am so happy that you had a nice trip!

Yay, another knitter. I'm glad she took to it so quickly. How fun to have a hand in that. :)

This weekend I taught my neices how to sew. They barely put down their bags and headbands to take a break for cake. I think I was having just as much fun as they were.

And I'm not why we always seem to have so much in common but I started a clapotis scarf today. Freaky. How is your Francis going? I'd love to try one someday.

Holy cow - she's going to socks for a second project? And isn't it fun to have a new convert? Good for you for bringing another one into the fold!

How fun to be able to share something you love so much with your sister now! I remember when I first learned to knit...my fingers would twitch, and I'd count stitches as I went to sleep at night. ;)

Glad you had a good time. Loving all the photos!
I need to find someone patient enough to teach me to knit properly. I just can't get the hang of it.

How fun that you have another knitter in the family! That was great thinking to bring along extra supplies to teach your sister on the plane.

Great action shots here!
