Lately, I've felt generally uninspired to finish up projects so there they sit. Maybe it is the constant busy-ness of the days or just a creative slump. I have a few so close to finishing including a couple quilts and skirts but alas the time for finishing them is not right now. My plan these days is to wait for that fury inside of me to rise up and fill me with creative energy. Surely this lull won't last long.
I did spend a good amount of Sunday night paper punching and sewing up paper garland inspired by this garland that made me swoon. It was so simple and really pleasing to make. I think the future of paper garland is good here especially since I haven't gotten around to sewing up a bunting yet. I found a paper punch at the craft store and some pretty paper, add a crafty friend and some Kate Nash on the pandora and I was set.
I also whipped up a snack to send out in the mail this week. I think they will be perfect for late nights studying, reading, or knitting. Really though, I think they are perfect to say 'I'm thinking of you right now' and that is always a good thing.
Breakfast Cookies
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1 tbsp ground flax seed + 3 tbsp boiling water (whisked together to form a thick liquid)
1 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
6 cinnamon graham crackers, crushed into a meal
2 cups whole oats
Preheat the oven to 350. Mix the butter, brown sugar, white sugar, flax seed and vanilla together. In a separate bowl whisk together the flour, baking soda, and graham crackers together. Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and then add the oats. You can also add a handful of nuts (I like adding walnuts) or seeds if you want. I'm sure raisins or other dried fruit would taste good as well. I'm a fan of chocolate so I added a handful of a chopped chocolate bar and gently mixed. The dough should come together well when rolled into a ball. If it doesn't, add a slash of milk. I added chocolate soy milk--yum! Bake in the oven for 10 minutes or until golden brown.

23 notes:
I also need to find time to just sit and be. I'm so busy this semester trying to finish everything up that there just hasn't been time. Even now, I'm just taking a blog break from grading papers... I'll be able to "just sit" in a couple weeks... and it will be so good.
p.s. I love the garland. That punch would be perfect for tags on favors (can you tell I'm on the lookout for ideas?)
Your creative "lull" sounds like you're still more productive than me right now. ;) I love the garland and those cookies look delicious!
yay for a yellow banner!
i love your paper garland, i have the same paper punch now to find some pretty papers in shades of yellow and aqua of course : )
Paper garland? Who would have thought? Show us where this will hang (please).
Oh, those cookies look good!
Great new banner! And that garland is super cute -- what a fun idea for a quick project when you don't have time for bunting -- thanks for the inspiration!
Pretty garland! I will be trying your cookie recipe THIS week, thank you...and I love your new banner :)
Have a nice week Jessica!
Pretty garland! Those cookies look delicious--just the thing for saying, "I'm thinking of you right now."
We make breakfast cookies from Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar that are quite similar to those. They are a huge hit around here. :)
Do you grind the flax yourself, or do you buy it ground?
those look delish! Do you use the flax instead of an eggs? Flax doesn't agree with me, but I SO want to try these. And that garland is adorable!
Hi there,
I've visited your site a few times over the last few years. Found you through Kathleen at Mamas Always Write. Definitely going to try your cookies.
Steph
i LOVE the garland! and those cookies look yummy, too!
the cookies look yummy and the garland is very cute, doesn't look like you were in much of a slump to me:) but i know what you mean, i have many unfinished projects and they drive me crazy.
Love the new yellow banner, Jessica. I headed over here for a little pick me up, and you come through, as always. I hope the rest of your week is wonderful.
Linn
I have a similar paper garland and love it.
The breakfast cookies sound fabulous!
Hi Jessica, been reading for a while now. I made those cookies last night, really good. Where did you get that recipe?
I've made a garland similar to that for valentines day, different colored felt hearts, turned out great. So easy. I really enjoy your blog.
That garland is so cute!
I've had a year of unfinished projects and now I'm finally buckling down and finishing up the last little bits...you'll get to your things eventually.
Good to hear that you had a resorative weekend - I could use one of those myself! Love the garland; sometimes it's fun to make something completely different and just let the unfinished stuff be. You'll get to it eventually!
thank you so much for the cookies. they are delicious. i also loved your note. its nice to know youre thinking of me and cookies are the perfect way to say it : )
I too have been in a bit of a lull lately . . . but when I really think about it, the "so much" that "I have to do" may be what is causing the lull. Do you ever feel that way? Like you should declutter the mind stuff or have tos in your life? This is where I am at right now.
I just wanted to write and let you know that I've added your blog to my blogroll. I've been reading your blog for a while now, although until I started my own blog I really haven't been much of a commenter. So, here's just a note to say thanks for sharing such wonderful snippits of your life, your arts and your photos with us.
Sincerely, jeanine ertl

That is so funny, because I was just thinking the other day that I wanted to make breakfast cookies for the boys, especially for those new school mornings where I still have a hard time getting everyone together :)
I have that same set of scrapbooking paper, and now I know what we might do with it.
