Vintage Picnics

Vintage Picnic V. 2
We're moving into my favorite time of year-the time of year when all meals can be eaten outside.  There is something simple and wonderful about taking a meal to the ground.  It's almost full circle to enjoy a meal on the ground in which it was grown.  For the most part, the preparation of picnic meals involves gathering fresh bread, cheese, fruit and vegetables.  Sometimes a bit more thought goes into it, but really my picnics are simple. They are all about sun and sharing with others.
Vintage Picnic V. 2.1
The other day I made a picnic quilt out of some vintage sheets I had used for various other projects.  I have a hard time parting with vintage sheets since they are so hard to come by for me but a picnic quilt seemed like the perfect way to enjoy them.  My beach/picnic quilt from last year is just too small to really use for more than two people so a larger quilt became essential for this year. I cut 20 18 inch squares of sheeting and sewed them together.  I actually quilted this on my machine at home which would have been moons easier if I could have found my walking foot.  I do love the 'looser' look of a only slightly quilted quilt at times.  Loops and stipples have their place, but the look of simple line quilting was just right for this project.  (Excuse the wrinkly look--it was so windy yesterday that the quilt kept flying across the schoolhouse lawn).

Now picnic season can begin.  The farmer's market will open soon and I'm hoping to add a bolga basket from the co-op to carry the food.  I'm thinking my craft lull is a thing of the past.  Thank you all for your encouragement--it was just what I needed.

I love the quilt (and those lounge pants you made awhile back)...I have a sewing machine, but can't sew, even after taking a class. I'm telling you, it would change my life! I make paper garland too, but have to paste two pieces together with string in the middle!

Sweet! I love vintage sheets. In fact, I just made a picnic quilt made from sheets, too, except it is quite finished. I have never made a quilt before, don't have a walking foot (don't even know what that does...some sewer I am admitting to being) and have no idea how to "quilt" it and avoid the wrinkles. (Tips? I am going to post photos of it with this very question very soon, so look for it and help me out, ok?!)

This quilt is so pretty! We are gearing up for picnic season around here too. I am loving this spring so far (especially with all of my free time) and am so excited for all of the outdoor possibilities coming up this summer.
